MEDICAL GASTRO-ENTEROLOGY AND ENDOSCOPY
|
Gasteroenterolgy is the branch of medicine whereby the digestive system and its disorders are studied. Diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, which includes the organs from mouth to anus, along the alimentary canal, are the focus of this specialty. Physicians practicing in this field of medicine are called gastroenterologists.
Endoscopic procedures like upper GI Endoscopy with a GASTROSCOPE is performed to rule out ulcers, cancers, etc. , and biopsy of the lesion via the gastroscope is sometimes taken. Sclerotherapy for Oesophageal varices ( which occur in portal hypertension and liver failure) to prevent vomiting of blood is also performed here.
Sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy (Examination of the rectum, sigmoid and large intestine) are done with a COLONOSCOPE to find out the cause of altered bowel habits, chronic diarrhea, blood in the motion etc. The test is to take a look into the lower Gastro-intestinal tract and make a diagnosis.
