Ankle injuries are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries, affecting people of all ages and activity levels. From a simple sprain to more serious conditions like fractures or Achilles tendon ruptures, these injuries can significantly affect your mobility and quality of life. Whether caused by a misstep on the stairs or during high-impact sports, it’s important to understand these injuries, recognize the symptoms, and seek timely treatment to prevent long-term complications.

In this blog, we delve deep into four major ankle injuries—ankle fractures, ankle sprains, Achilles tendonitis, and Achilles tendon ruptures—covering their symptoms, causes, diagnostic procedures, treatment options, and the importance of rehabilitation.

1. Ankle Fractures

What is it?

An ankle fracture occurs when one or more of the bones that make up the ankle joint (tibia, fibula, or talus) break due to trauma or excessive stress. The fracture can range from a small crack to a complete break that displaces the bone.

Symptoms:

Immediate and sharp pain

Swelling and bruising

Deformity in the ankle area

Inability to bear weight or walk

Bone protrusion in severe cases

Common Causes:

Falls from a height

Twisting injuries during sports

Motor vehicle accidents

Missteps or direct impact trauma

Diagnosis:

X-ray is the first-line imaging to confirm a fracture.

CT scan or MRI may be used for complex or compound fractures to assess ligament and soft tissue damage.

Treatment Options:

Non-surgical: Casting or splinting for stable fractures

Surgical: For displaced or complex fractures requiring internal fixation (plates, screws)

Recovery: May take 6–12 weeks, followed by physiotherapy

2. Ankle Sprains

What is it?

An ankle sprain happens when the ligaments—tough bands of tissue connecting bones—are stretched or torn, usually due to rolling or twisting of the foot.

Symptoms:

Pain (mild to severe)

Swelling and tenderness

Bruising around the ankle

Difficulty in walking or bearing weight

Stiffness or instability in the joint

Common Causes:

Sudden twist or roll of the ankle

Sports activities involving jumping or quick changes in direction

Walking or running on uneven surfaces

Diagnosis:

Physical exam and patient history

MRI if ligament tears or chronic instability is suspected

Treatment Options:

R.I.C.E. therapy: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation

Bracing: Ankle supports or braces to stabilize the joint

Medications: Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs

Rehabilitation: Stretching and strengthening exercises to prevent recurrence

3. Achilles Tendonitis

What is it?

Achilles tendonitis is the inflammation of the Achilles tendon—the thick band connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. It is typically an overuse injury.

Symptoms:

Pain and stiffness along the back of the heel, especially in the morning

Swelling or thickening of the tendon

Tenderness to touch

Pain that worsens with activity

Common Causes:

Repetitive strain from running or jumping

Wearing unsupportive footwear

Tight calf muscles or a sudden increase in activity level

Flat feet or biomechanical abnormalities

Diagnosis:

Physical examination

Ultrasound or MRI to detect inflammation or micro-tears

Treatment Options:

Rest and ice application

NSAIDs to reduce inflammation

Heel lifts or orthotics to reduce strain

Eccentric exercises and physical therapy

In chronic cases, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections or surgical intervention may be considered

4. Achilles Tendon Rupture

What is it?

A rupture of the Achilles tendon is a complete tear of the tendon and is usually sudden and dramatic, often occurring during physical activities.

Symptoms:

Sudden, severe pain in the back of the ankle or calf (often described as being “kicked” in the heel)

A popping or snapping sound

Difficulty walking or standing on tiptoe

Swelling and weakness

Common Causes:

Explosive movements (e.g., jumping, sprinting)

Sudden pivoting

Degeneration due to age or untreated tendonitis

Poor conditioning or overexertion

Diagnosis:

Thompson test (calf squeeze test)

MRI or ultrasound to confirm the rupture and assess severity

Treatment Options:

Surgical repair is often recommended for active individuals

Non-surgical methods involve casting or bracing the foot in a downward position

Rehabilitation is essential for restoring strength, flexibility, and function

When to Seek Medical Help

It’s crucial not to ignore ankle pain or assume it will heal on its own. Seek immediate medical attention if:

You hear a pop or snap at the time of injury

You experience severe pain, inability to bear weight, or visible deformity

Pain and swelling persist beyond a few days

There’s instability or frequent spraining

Delays in diagnosis or treatment can lead to chronic ankle instability, joint arthritis, or permanent tendon damage.

Why Rehabilitation is Important

Rehabilitation is a key component of healing and regaining function after an ankle injury. It helps:

Restore mobility and flexibility

Rebuild muscle strength and joint stability

Prevent recurring injuries

Safely return to daily activities or sports

Skipping rehab can result in incomplete healing and long-term problems such as stiffness, imbalance, or weakness.

Conclusion

When it comes to addressing vocal cord cysts with precision and care, Hande Hospital’s ENT surgical centre led by the esteemed Dr. Sathyanarayanan JD, MBBS; M.S. (ENT), specializes in advanced ENT procedures, including the microlaryngeal excision of vocal cord cysts using the innovative microflap technique here at the best multispeciality hospital in Chennai.

Understanding Vocal Cord Cysts and Their Impact

Vocal cord cysts are benign lesions that can significantly affect the quality of voice and speech. These cysts, which may be caused by straining vocal chords or congenital factors, often present symptoms such as hoarseness, voice fatigue, and loss of vocal range. Left untreated, these cysts can lead to chronic vocal problems, severely impacting a person’s quality of life.

Cutting-Edge Microlaryngeal Surgery at Hande Hospital

Dr. Sathyanarayanan JD, a renowned ENT, Head & Neck, and Skull Base Surgeon at Hande Hospital, employs the microflap technique to excise vocal cord cysts. This minimally invasive procedure is designed to ensure precise removal of the cyst while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue, thus promoting a swift and effective recovery.

The Microflap Technique: A Closer Look

The microflap technique is performed under general anesthesia, ensuring patient comfort and safety. This is a natural orifice surgery done with a state-of-the-art 4k hd camera and monitor. Laser is used for excision and hemostasis in a few cases. Using a high-powered microscope, a small flap is created on the vocal cord. This allows for direct access to the cyst, which is then carefully removed. The microflap is repositioned, allowing the vocal cord to heal naturally.

This technique offers several advantages:

Minimally Invasive: Reduced trauma to surrounding tissues.

Precision: Enhanced accuracy in cyst removal.

Quick Recovery: Faster return to normal voice function.

This procedure usually takes 15 to 30 minutes and the patients are treated as day-care patients.

Post-Operative Care and Recovery

Following the procedure, patients typically experience minimal discomfort and can often return to their daily activities within a few days. Voice rest is crucial during the initial recovery period to ensure optimal healing. Dr. Sathyanarayanan and the Hande hospital team provide comprehensive post-operative care, including voice therapy, to facilitate a smooth recovery and prevent recurrence.

Why Choose Hande Hospital?

Dr. Sathyanarayanan JD’s expertise at both Hande hospitals and Royal Pearl Hospitals, the personalised care, commitment to excellence as well as Hande Hospital state-of-the-art facilities, ensure that patients receive top-notch treatment for vocal cord cysts and other ENT conditions.

Mastoidectomy is a surgical procedure performed to address problems within the mastoid bone
located at back of the ear. This comes into place when chronic ear infections are not responsive to
antibiotics or even removal of abnormal growths like cholesteatomas.

The Procedure
Mastoidectomy is relatively simple, with general anaesthesia being administered during the
procedure. The doctor makes an incision behind the ear, opens up the mastoid bone and takes out
infected air cells and/or abnormal tissues. Depending on its severity, a surgery may be easy or take
other more complicated forms such as radical or modified radical mastoidectomies

Benefits
This is because by removing diseased tissue from the body, patients often experience so much relief
in terms of chronic pain and discharge among others. Patients who get this operation can also have
their cholesteatoma development stopped and therefore get better preservation of hearing in
addition to surrounding structures.

Simplicity and Recovery
The surgery usually lasts between 30 minutes to 1 hour and is performed under an operating
microscope by Dr. Sathyanarayanan JD MS (ENT) – Consultant ENT, Head, Neck & Skull Base
Surgeon in the state-of-the-art Operating Theatre at Hande Hospital. He states that despite its
complexities, when conducted by an surgeon, a mastoidectomy remains a customary, low-risk
operation. Post surgical recovery takes about 3 to 5 weeks and the patient will need to refrain from
engaging in strenuous activities or exercise for around 4 weeks. Their doctor or surgeon can advise
on any gentle exercises they can do while they recover.
All discharge instructions will have to be followed carefully to help prevent infection during recovery,
including covering the affected ear and preventing it from getting wet.

Cervical cancer, is a silent adversary affecting many women worldwide. It is predominantly caused by persistent infections of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). A holistic approach to combat this disease involves exploring its causes, early detection methods, treatment options, prevention strategies, and the pivotal role of HPV vaccines.

Causes: Cervical cancer is primarily linked to high-risk HPV strains, notably 16 and 18 and is transmitted through sexual contact. Persistent / Recurrent infections can lead to cellular changes, eventually culminating in cancerous growth in the cervix.

Early Detection: Regular screenings, such as Pap smears and HPV tests, are instrumental in detecting abnormalities at an early stage. Timely intervention significantly improves treatment outcomes, highlighting the importance of routine gynecological examinations.

Treatment: Treatment options may vary based on the cancer’s stage, ranging from surgery for early cases to a combination of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy for advanced stages. Tailoring treatment plans to individual cases is crucial for effective outcomes.

Prevention: Unlike other cancers, the window of detection in this case is 15 years. So regular screening is critical. It can be prevented using a multifaceted approach: good genital and personal hygiene, practicing safe sex, routine screenings, and embracing HPV vaccination as a powerful preventive measure.

HPV Vaccines: Notable HPV vaccines like Gardasil 9 and Cervarix provide protection against multiple high-risk HPV strains, including 16 and 18. Administering these vaccines is essential for both genders, as they play a critical role in reducing the overall burden of cervical cancer.

Who Should Take the Vaccine: Routine HPV vaccination is recommended for both girls and boys, ideally starting around the ages of 9-16. Vaccination at an early age ensures immunity before potential exposure to the virus which is mostly through intercourse.

Why Boys Should Take the Vaccine: HPV vaccination not only protects against cervical cancer but also guards against other cancers, such as anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers which can affect Boys.

By vaccinating both genders, we create a collective shield, breaking the transmission cycle and fostering a healthier future for all.

In conclusion, a comprehensive approach to cervical cancer involves understanding its causes, early detection, treatment, and prioritizing preventive measures such as HPV vaccination. Initiating vaccination at an early age for both girls and boys is a proactive step toward creating a world where cervical cancer becomes a rarity rather than a threat.

To know more about the various HPV vaccinations available and also to book you’re your appointment with our Senior Consultant Dr. S. Tamilarasi MBBS., DGO (Obstetrician, Gynecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon) for a cervical examination along with a pap smear test please call us at Hande Hospital 98410 11390.

Coblation tonsillectomy is a new approach that has become popular among pediatric ENT practitioners; it is a type of surgical procedure performed to remove tonsils, which are large lymphoid tissues situated
at the back of throat. This process is also known as controlled ablation.

How does Coblation differ?
The traditional methods of removing tonsils usually involved cutting or burning them and this increased post operative pain, longer recovery times and higher risks of complications such as bleeding. Instead, a
technique called coblation (controlled ablation) is used. A saline solution is electrified with radio frequency energy to create a plasma field that is highly focused. By doing so, the plasma gently and precisely dissolves and removes the tonsils while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy
tissue.

Before Operation

Thus, children have much less pain after surgery, recover more quickly, and return to normal activities sooner than usual. The best part is that the entire procedure is completed within 8 minutes. Reduced post-operative discomfort and shorter recovery periods are among the main advantages when compared with the conventional techniques for removal of tonsillitis due to coblation making it possible for children to resume eating and drinking earlier without having to take strong painkillers.

Additionally, Coblation’s ability to minimize tissue damage lowers the risk of post-operative bleeding, a significant concern after tonsillectomy. This is especially crucial in pediatric cases where a child’s smaller body and potential complications require extra caution.

                                         No Blood During Surgery

Dr. Sathyanarayanan JD MS (ENT) – Consultant ENT, Head, Neck & Skull Base Surgeon at Hande Hospital highly recommends this procedure and states that both Parents and ENT specialists alike have
welcomed Coblation tonsillectomy for its improved outcomes and safety profile. Its precision and gentle tissue treatment have made it the new norm in pediatric ENT, offering a more favorable experience for young patients undergoing tonsil surgery.
