Laser Lithotripsy: Precision Treatment for Urinary Stones

At Hande Hospital, recognized as the best urology hospital in Chennai, we are committed to providing cutting-edge medical solutions for our patients. One such innovative procedure is laser lithotripsy, a highly effective method for breaking up and removing stones in the kidney, bladder, ureter, or urethra. At Hande Hospital’s Laser, Laparoscopic & Cosmetic Surgical Centre we use a minimally invasive technique that offers a safer and more precise alternative to traditional stone removal methods.

Overview

Laser lithotripsy involves using a laser to fragment stones within the urinary tract. Our Specialist, Dr. Raajiv Dorai – MS (General Surgery) FICS, FAIS General Surgeon & Urologist performs this procedure during a ureteroscopy by inserting a flexible laser fiber through a scope into the urinary tract to target and break up the stones. The stone fragments are then removed using a small basket or other instruments, all without the need for incisions.

Procedure Details

Before the procedure, patients are advised to fast for eight hours and avoid certain medications. On the day of the procedure, general anaesthesia is administered to ensure comfort. The laser is inserted via a scope through the urethra to break up the stones. A temporary stent may be placed to assist in passing the stone fragments, which is removed later.

The entire process typically takes one to two hours, and patients can expect some discomfort post-procedure due to the stent and minor bleeding in the urine.

Risks and Benefits

Laser lithotripsy boasts several advantages over shock wave lithotripsy, including higher success rates and effectiveness regardless of the stone’s size, location, or hardness. It is particularly beneficial for patients who are pregnant or on blood thinners. Common side effects include pain, difficulty urinating, and blood in the urine. Rare complications can include ureteral injury, urinary tract infections, or blockage from stone fragments.
